Building relationships that make the difference

Groups and Clubs

Directions  facilitates  social gatherings for groups of people with a disability who share a friendship base or we will also help create events/activities  where they can share in an experience or interest and join to make new friends.

Our aim is to run groups when a collection of people we support decide that they would like to get together and collaborate. The Breakout group is one such group, made up of five young men of similar interests and enthusiasms who like to spend time together.

The people we support, with assistance from Directions staff and volunteers, run various craft groups, a drama group, a fitness group and a new cooking club too. These inclusive groups are for all that are interested including people that we support, family members and staff.

Directions now also runs the fabulous Teenspirit, providing a broad range of social activities for teenagers and young adults in the local community. Teenspirit has been helping young people with disability get together with their friends, form new friendships, and have fun.  Teenspirit creates opportunities for teenagers to develop their social skills and have fun with friends.  Our get-togethers and excursions also help young adults stay in touch with their friends when they leave school and step out into the adult world

Our staff are in their early to mid-twenties undergoing university studies. They are old enough to be good mentors and guardians, but also young enough to actively participate and enjoy the same activities as the teenagers and young adults we support.

Teenspirit currently runs from Maddington servicing the Southern and Eastern suburbs of Perth, Mirrabooka for North of the river and Mandurah in the Peel Region.

Here is what people say about Teenspirit.

“Teenspirit has built our daughters confidence & given her a sense of belonging.  Before Teenspirit, she  was lost in a mainstream society, struggling to fit in & loathing her disability.  The young carers & organisers of Teenspirit have literally taken her from a sad & lonely place to a fun and safe club of acceptance & friendships. Teenspirit are always open to suggestions to build on their already fantastic service.  As parents we know that when we drop her off she is safe, enjoying her friends and the fun young carers who make them feel like Normal Teenagers Just hanging out.  I hope to see the group get more exposure so they can continue to grow in their development and services.  We are truly blessed to have stumbled across them.”  John and Nicole

Teenspirit also run the monthly Kenwick social and this is now a Directions venture too. Young people flock to this
vibrant night out from all over the metropolitan area. People we support are now involved in organising this regular
event and running the night, furthering our aim for all Directions events to be ‘by the people, for the people’!
