On Wednesday night, the Student Occupational Therapists held a sundowner social group session at the Sail and Anchor pub, Fremantle. The group was aimed at adults who were interested in meeting new people and socialising in a natural setting. There was a big turnout. The session went extremely well and those that attended were keen to book in another outing! It was a great opportunity to work on social skills, the student Occupational Therapists helped to coach on initiating and reciprocating conversation with people you have just met. They also looked at what is appropriate and not appropriate to say and do when you are first meeting people and did some role play activities to put what they had learnt to the test. The evening was a great success and it was a great way for people to push themselves outside their comfort zone, having less formal supports there, they were having to rely a lot more on themselves and their abilities. It gave some people the opportunity to go to the pub which they had never done before, and the chance to build more life experiences and hopefully learn some new social skills.
